Antique Neoclassical Revival Table Lamp, circa early 20th century

A striking example of early 20th-century decorative lighting, this Neoclassical Revival Table Lamp draws upon the art and ornament of ancient Greece and Rome, reinterpreted through the richly layered decorative style of the turn of the century.

The sculptural body is finished in a deep verdigris green and encircled by beautifully modeled classical figures in flowing drapery. Gilt details punctuate the design, from the ornamental border to the expressive classical mask and foliate elements at the neck. A dark green and white veined marble base grounds the lamp, creating the rich combination of patinated metal, gilding, and stone so often associated with fine Neoclassical Revival lighting of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Comparable period examples frequently employed bronze or bronze-finished metal alongside marble, classical figures, urn forms, masks, acanthus leaves, and other motifs borrowed from antiquity.

The Neoclassical Revival looked back to the symmetry, mythology, architecture, and ornament of the ancient world, bringing these historic motifs into fashionable European and American interiors. By the early 1900s, electric lighting offered designers a new opportunity to transform these sculptural forms into functional objects, and elaborate table lamps became decorative works in their own right.
